Alarming Rise In Use Of Steroids, A Cause Of Grave Concern- Dr Purohit

Ujjain 31.01.2019. Use of steroids to boost one’s performance and stand out has become common among athletes, especially bodybuilders across the world. Its prevalence and trend is picking up in India too. Steroids boost performance and strengthens muscles in a very short span, which is why sportsmen take doses before competitions to enhance their performance and have an edge over others, reveals a expert.
Dr Naresh Purohit, who is Visiting Professor at the Kolkata- based West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS), School of Public Health said in his research study that there are several drugs like painkillers which have steroids in them and affects a sportsman’s performance . That is why doping is a big issue these days and any performance boosting drug taken knowingly or unknowingly is considered illegal that invites severe punishment.
Dr Purohit presented his study at a National Continuing Medical Education Programme on indiscriminate use of antibiotics and steroids organised by the Bankura Sammilani Medical College, Bankura.
‘ Every sportsperson should be well informed by his/her coach or organising body/sponsor of drugs to be avoided and how such consumption could end one’s carrier. Athletes should be informed that sports are to increase physical and mental health and is both morally and socially illegal to use unethical means such as drugs to win competition.”observed he.
Principal Investigator of the study, Dr Purohit observed that therapeutic use of drugs do not lead to false growth of physique or muscles but athletes and body-builders use 10-15 times of therapeutic doses to enhance their capabilities.
He warned, that the situation is alarming and excessive intake of steroids can cause hormonal disorder and other complications including heart attack, aggressiveness, paranoid psychosis, prostrate hypertrophy, elevated hepatic enzymes and even liver cancer in extreme cases in long run.
He revealed in his study that many school students too are found using anabolic steroid and such drugs are being procured in black market or from drugstores without a doctor’s prescription. Rising instances of this habit amongst youngsters portend a grave threat to the society and our future.
He underlined in his study that anabolic steroid abuse acts as a gate to opium addiction as well that further complicates this social problem. Factors responsible for tendency toward, anabolic steroid abuse include lack of emotional relationship with parents ,childhood problems, appearance disapproval, low self-esteem, bodybuilding, weightlifting and history of alcohol and tobacco use.
