Urgent Need for Evaluation of Diagnostic Services In Healthcare.

Ujjain 02.01.2020. Healthcare for common man is in a horrible condition. Healthcare lately has become a very attractive business venture and laboratories for various investigations are mushrooming rapidly. But their growth is haphazard and their utilisation without any definite direction. Corporate hospitals most of the time rotate patients through all departments and charge. The senior consultant of each speciality is obliged to generate more and more money for the hospital by any conceivable means. The patients suffer not only financially , but also physically for going through several unnecessary diagnostic procedures not contributing anything for his or her health. Cut back system is rampant in umpteen private healthcare institutions revealed an expert.
Federation of Hospital Administrators Executive Member Dr Naresh Purohit presented his research report titled “Medical Malpractice And Exploitation of Common Man In Private Healthcare Institutions” at a National Seminar On Challenges In Healthcare Management held at Indian Institute of Management , Ranchi recently.
Public Health expert Dr Purohit told Blue Eyes after presenting his report that high-tech radiological imaging can be beneficial but must be used very sparingly and only when absolutely necessary because it exposes the body to dangerous ionizing radiation- radiation that is proven to cause cancer.
Lead Author of the study Dr Purohit pointed in his study that rapid growth of CT scans which provides detailed pictures of the body, has led to big increase in the average total radiation exposure. Indians are presently exposed to seven times more radiation from diagnostic scans than they were in 1980- a risk for everyone but greater for children. About one -third of all CT scans that are done right now are medically unnecessary.
He estimated in his study that the overuse of diagnostic CT scans may cause up to two million excess cancers over the next 20 to 30 years.
“The cumulative doses of radiological investigations may be harmful. A CT scan of the chest delivers 100 times the radiation of a conventional chest X-ray – a fact not known to majority of doctors who perform this investigation.”averred Dr Purohit
He said that medical fraternity should constantly remember that medical laboratories doing investigations are concerned with human lives and errors will only bring misery on all fields. Our aim should be to minimise them.
